Main Station Area to Get Modern, Sustainable Neighborhood by Q2 2026

A comprehensive development plan for the neighborhood around the main station is underway. The project aims to create a modern, sustainable, and livable neighborhood with a mix of residential, commercial, leisure, and mobility options. The plan includes ambitious sustainable mobility initiatives and green spaces.

The development, set to be finalized in the first or early second quarter of 2026, will provide around 600 residential units, with 30% designated as affordable housing. Key features include a robust public transport system, bicycle parking facilities, and concentrated car parking in neighborhood garages. Green spaces will be expanded, notably Park Viewegs Garden, and rainwater will be used efficiently.

The public participation process has begun, with planning documents available online at www.ourwebsite.de/public-building-plans and at the Old Town Hall on workdays from 8 AM to 5 PM. A public event on October 9th at 6 PM at BC III, Willy-Brandt-Platz 13, Ground Floor, will detail the plan and welcome questions. However, the institution handling the draft planning for the main station area after this event remains uncertain.

The main station area development promises a sustainable, mixed-use neighborhood. With public input and feedback, the plan aims to enhance the city's livability and sustainability. The finalized plan will be submitted to the committees for resolution in the first half of 2026.
