Major Customs Operation Uncovers 51 Cases of Irregularities in Thuringia and South Saxony's Catering and Accommodation Sector
Customs authorities in Thuringia and South Saxony have conducted a major inspection operation in the catering and accommodation sector. The operation, led by the Main Customs Office Erfurt, uncovered potential irregularities in 51 cases, leading to criminal and administrative proceedings. The inspections, involving 110 customs officers, targeted the sector due to its high risk of illegal work.
The operation, held in September 2025, inspected 46 businesses. It focused on compliance with the general minimum wage, set at 12.82 euros gross per hour since January 1, 2025. The inspections also targeted social security obligations and illegal employment, as well as receipt of social benefits.
Customs officers questioned 208 employees about their employment relationships. The Thuringian tax administration participated, checking cash management and wage tax collection. Dana Schleußinger, head of the Main Customs Office Erfurt, praised the operation's contribution to tax justice and fair competition.
The operation resulted in 11 criminal proceedings and 9 administrative penalty proceedings. Extensive follow-up inspections are planned to compare employee data with payroll and financial accounting. The customs office's risk-oriented approach aims to protect public tasks and fair competition, as illegal work deprives the state of social security contributions and taxes.
