McDonald's Taiwan Swaps Plastic Lamination and Paper Boxes
McDonald's Taiwan has embarked on a series of environmental initiatives aimed at reducing waste and promoting sustainability. The latest move focuses on a significant packaging overhaul and waste reduction efforts.
Beginning in July 2023, McDonald's Taiwan eliminated the use of plastic lamination and paper boxes for popular items such as the Big Mac, Chicken McNuggets, Filet-O-Fish, and Apple Pie. These items are now served in paper wraps and bags instead of boxes, a change expected to save around 10,000 trees annually.
In addition to this, the plastic lamination inside packaging has been replaced by materials made from starch or silicon. This replacement is projected to reduce plastic usage by 86 metric tons per year.
This initiative followed three years of research, development, and testing before a formal launch. It was initially piloted in October 2024 in two eco-friendly concept stores and expanded to four more by March 2025.
Furthermore, over 200 McDonald's restaurants in Taiwan now offer reusable cups to decrease single-use cup waste.
These moves are part of McDonald's Taiwan's broader commitment to environmental sustainability and represent a strategic shift towards more eco-friendly packaging and waste reduction practices. The company continues to strive for a more sustainable future, setting an example for other businesses to follow.
