LWL Open-Air Museum in Detmold to be Renamed and Transition to Year-Round Operation
In a decision made by the Landscape Committee of the LWL on 4th July, the LWL Open-Air Museum in Detmold will undergo a significant transformation. The museum will continue to be part of the LWL Museum Hellerlecht, Westphalian Museum for Culture and History, but will now be known as "LWL Museum Hellerlecht, Westphalian Museum for Culture and History".
The change in name was made after constructive conversations across all democratic party boundaries and aims to reflect the museum's broader cultural and historical significance. However, the decision has caused some controversy, with many critics expressing concern over the omission of "Detmold" in the main title.
Despite the controversy, the museum will remain an integral part of Detmold, with the location being displayed on the building near the entrance. In external communication, the representation "LWL Museum Hellerlecht | Detmold - Westphalian Museum for Culture and History" will be used.
The adaptation will take place with the opening of the new entrance and exhibition building in 2026. This transformation will allow the museum to transition to year-round operation, making it more accessible to visitors.

Detmold will also be included in the corporate design as part of the word mark, in headers and titles of print media and websites. The museum's name, including "Detmold", will also be displayed on the building near the entrance, ensuring that the city's connection to the museum is maintained.
The open-air museum in Detmold will remain part of its new brand, but with a renewed focus on year-round operation and broader cultural and historical significance. The adaptation is expected to bring exciting changes to the museum, making it a must-visit destination for history and culture enthusiasts.
