Health Update: Permanent Video Consultations for Ailing Kids, Expansion to Adults Possible

In the near future, parents of sick kids won't have to fear long trips for help. The Hessian Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVH) plans to make video consultations a permanent fixture in pediatric care, starting October 1st. After dazzling results from a two-year trial, these video consultations will help kids and their parents avoid trips to the on-call center and waiting lines.
According to Armin Beck, deputy chairman of the KVH board, the video consultations method has proven successful. The goal is to spare ill children and their parents the grueling journey to the on-call center and to eliminate waiting periods.
For families blessed with unwell kids, the ongoing convenience is a welcome development. Parents of sick children and teenagers can currently make appointments via the 116117 hotline during certain holidays, such as Corpus Christi weekend. Staff then assess the ailment's severity over video, scheduling a call with a pediatrician if necessary. Families can join the consultation via a link. In case a physical examination of the child is required, a referral to the nearest pediatric on-call center follows.
Unfortunately, not all complaints qualify for an online consultation. High fever or serious injuries are examples of issues that necessitate a physical examination, as per Beck. However, video consultations work excellently for addressing various rashes, conjunctivitis, stomach flu, or prescription concerns.
Starting October 1st, the service will be available on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 pm to midnight, on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 7 pm to midnight, and on weekends from 7 am to 7 pm.
What's more, Beck has hinted at expanding the emergency care via video to adults in the future.
Telehealth, video consultations, and off-peak appointments are the new trends in care. For instance, comparable pediatric care programs in other regions show the benefits of remote consultations for children and teenagers. These advantages include early intervention, hassle-free access to specialist advice, strong interdisciplinary communication, and simplified family life through reduced travel. The scalability of these telehealth models extends to adults, making it possible for KVH to expand their service offerings.
