Right-Wing Attack Targets 'House Project Zelle 79' in Cottbus

Cottbus, Brandenburg — A coordinated attack on the 'House Project Zelle 79', an alternative living project in Cottbus, has sparked calls for stronger action against right-wing extremism from the state government.

In the early hours of Saturday, around five individuals, some masked, engaged in a feared arson attempt using pyrotechnics and shouted unconstitutional slogans. The residents extinguished the small fire caused during the incident. The State Protection Unit in Brandenburg is investigating the event as a breach of peace.

Andrea Lübbke, the state chairperson of Alliance 90/The Greens, expressed concern over such acts, stating they not only threaten immediate victims, but also fundamental values of democratic society. Lübbke insists that confronting right-wing extremism needs to be a top priority for the new interior minister, René Wilke (independent).

In recent months, other locations in South Brandenburg have also been targeted, including youth clubs and a cultural center. The 'House Project Zelle 79' was previously attacked in March, and the new interior minister, Wilke, has reportedly reached out to Cottbus's mayor, Tobias Schick (SPD), following the most recent incident.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office has initiated action against suspected right-wing extremists in South Brandenburg and other federal states in the past, with incidents such as the arson attack on a cultural house in Altdöbern and a foiled arson attempt on an asylum shelter in Senfenberg.

While the party's official stance on this particular attack is omitted in the search results, local authorities and organizations like 'Initiative Sichere Orte Südbrandenburg' have condemned the incident as an attempt to intimidate. National efforts against right-wing extremism remain ongoing, with the Generalbundesanwalt actively combatting groups in various areas of Germany.

  1. The Community policy, particularly those addressing right-wing extremism, should be reevaluated and strengthened in light of the recent attack on 'House Project Zelle 79'.
  2. Social-media platforms, as potential vectors for the spread of hate speech and extremist ideologies, need to be included in the employment policy of these agencies to combat such issues more effectively.
  3. The lifestyle of individuals promoting right-wing ideologies, or operating within extreme groups, can be a subject of study in the home-and-garden section of magazines, shedding light on the roots and recruitment practices of these groups.
  4. The entertainment industry, seeking to raise awareness and educate the public, might find value in producing content based on the 'House Project Zelle 79' incident, highlighting the threat of crime and justice issues rooted in right-wing extremism.
