Questions concerning aesthetic preferences: Will vinyl floor panels prove advantageous for bathroom use compared to tiling? After embarking on their installation in my own bathroom, I have developed a firm stance on the matter.
In the heart of Wiltshire, Lara Winter, a German expat and the creative force behind the popular Instagram account What A View Cottage, has been making waves with her modern take on rustic style. With over 240,000 followers, Lara's account showcases her transformative journey in her modern cottage, where she lives with her husband, two sons, and a ginger cat named Gizmo.
Recently, Lara undertook a significant project in her home - a DIY revamp of her bathroom vinyl flooring. Previously, the bathroom was adorned with beige tiles from floor to ceiling, but Lara yearned for a cosier, lived-in space with more vinyl floor decor and more texture and colour. She found her answer in self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles.
Lara sourced the vinyl tiles from Amtico, a Wiltshire-based company, and discovered a charming checkerboard pattern of terracotta and cream self-adhesive vinyl floor panels. Pleased with her find, she painted her bathroom with crisp white paint to provide a fresh canvas for her new vinyl flooring.
The installation process was not without its challenges. Lara found laying the first self-adhesive vinyl floor panel tricky, but it was easier than her initial plan of hand-stencilling every tile with a delicate green pattern. She discovered that overlapping the panels slightly provided the neatest result, given her house's crooked structure.
Lara found cutting the vinyl to fit snugly around the sink, toilet, and pipes surprisingly easy. She used a kitchen towel to smooth out each vinyl panel after placing it. The project, however, took longer than anticipated, and Lara's bathroom floor remains plain white for the time being.
Despite the delay, Lara is pleased with the result. She finds the self-adhesive vinyl floor panels easy to clean and would use them again, especially in bathrooms or rooms with less frequent furniture movement. Her bathroom vinyl flooring has held up well for three months, with only a tiny mark from a heavy toothbrush holder as a casualty.
Lara is starting a new series of columns on the platform, where she will share more of her DIY adventures and decor ideas for transforming country cottages. Follow What A View Cottage to join Lara on her journey and gain inspiration for your own home projects.
