Racing vehicle company Toyota advances plans for hydrogen fuel with the production of the Le Mans-ready GR LH2 racer.

In a significant stride towards a sustainable future, Toyota is positioning hydrogen as the front-runner, not just a sideshow. The Japanese automaker has unveiled the GR LH2 Racing Concept, a liquid hydrogen-fuelled prototype, as part of its ongoing efforts to develop hydrogen technology.

This innovative concept, based on the GR010 Hybrid Hypercar, is being used for track testing to refine technology and infrastructure. Measuring 5100mm in length and 2050mm in width, the GR LH2 Racing Concept is a testament to Toyota's commitment to pushing the boundaries of hydrogen technology.

The racing team using this concept is Toyota Gazoo Racing. The GR LH2 Racing Concept is built to test the pace and potential of hydrogen in motorsport, providing valuable insights for Toyota's real-world testing of hydrogen technology and infrastructure.

The switch to liquid hydrogen for the Corolla is planned for 2023, signalling Toyota's intent to integrate hydrogen technology into its consumer vehicles. In fact, a hydrogen Corolla has already completed a lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe, demonstrating the feasibility of hydrogen-powered vehicles in motorsport.

At Le Mans, the GR LH2 Racing Concept made its debut, paying tribute to the 1998 TS020 with a red-and-white livery on the #7 GR010 Hybrid. In contrast, the #8 GR010 Hybrid sported a stealth black livery, reflecting Toyota's "Hate to lose" mindset.

Toyota's foray into hydrogen motorsport is not limited to the GR LH2 Racing Concept. In 2021, a hydrogen-powered Corolla took part in the Super Taikyu series using gaseous hydrogen. The GR Yaris H2 also made a crowd-pleasing demo run at the Ypres Rally.

The GR LH2 Racing Concept was showcased at the H2 Village during the race's 93rd running, further emphasising Toyota's dedication to a broader hydrogen ecosystem. This continuation of Toyota's motorsport R&D is a significant step towards making ever-better cars through motorsport.

The GR LH2 Racing Concept uses a hydrogen combustion engine paired with a hybrid system, promising a promising future for hydrogen-powered vehicles. As Toyota continues to test and refine this technology, we can look forward to seeing hydrogen take its rightful place in the forefront of the automotive industry.
