Redefining urban landscapes at Neues Marktplatz: Mobile greenhouses take root

In the heart of Neuwied, a picturesque city in Germany, four mobile vertical gardens have been set up as a novel cooling solution. These innovative green structures, part of the "MobiGa" systems, were developed in cooperation with the Technical University of Bingen from 2018 to 2022.

MobiGa mobile vertical gardens are modular, moveable green walls designed to bring vegetation into urban environments. Equipped with irrigation systems and high-pressure misting technology, these vertical gardens maintain moisture for the plants and enhance evaporative cooling effects. The high-pressure mist system sprays fine water droplets that evaporate quickly, cooling the immediate air around the vertical garden.

These mobile gardens can provide significant relief in compact urban settings, locally reducing ambient temperatures, improving air quality, and increasing humidity. By mitigating the urban heat island effect, they contribute to urban microclimate management.

The city centre of Neuwied, with limited cooling greenery, was particularly uncomfortable during the recent heatwave. With temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius, the new vertical gardens are expected to lower the ambient temperature on hot days by up to twelve degrees.

The water consumption of the mist system is minimal, using only two to three liters per hour. The mobile gardens are already in use in numerous cities in Germany and Switzerland, demonstrating their effectiveness and versatility.

The subsidization of the new mobile gardens in Neuwied comes from the federal funding program "Future-Proof Cities and Centers" of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB). The city's climate adaptation manager, Daniel Ragonese, is tasked with making Neuwied more livable and sustainable in the face of climate change.
