Repaired Wooden Banjo-Style Clock with Dial Bezel Adjustment
=====================================================================
In this article, we delve into the fascinating world of antique and vintage clocks, as we share the restoration journey of a 181-year-old weight-driven banjo clock.
Cracking the Case
The case of the banjo clock, after nearly a year of dedicated work, has been meticulously cleaned, revealing its original beauty. The veneer issues on the two bottom corners have been addressed, and some flat-head screws have been replaced with smaller ones taken from old cases. A crack in the wood dial bezel has been addressed using a band clamp designed for furniture repair, and a new dial glass has been installed.
Ticking Time Again
The heart of the banjo clock, its movement, required special attention. Four new bushings have been installed to ensure smooth operation. The old brass cable has been removed and replaced, and the suspension spring, a delicate, replaceable component, has been carefully replaced without buying a whole new pendulum assembly. Since suspension springs are thin, fragile strips of metal, they were handled gently with suitable tools.
Fixing the Hands
The hands of the banjo clock were not left untouched. They were rubbed down with steel wool to remove rust, restoring their original shine.
A Stunning Result
After 10 months of dedicated work, the banjo clock project has come to a successful conclusion. The result is a complete and functional banjo clock that looks absolutely stunning. The age crack, just above the number eleven on the dial, has been addressed, and the clock ticks away, keeping accurate time once more.
