Safe Space Initiative Launches in Melbourne for Chinese Youth
A new initiative, Safe Space, has been launched in Melbourne to provide a supportive environment for Chinese youth. Led by Rev. Grace Wang and Ping Luo, this programme aims to connect young people who may be struggling with school, learning difficulties, or language gaps. Based at Holy Name Anglican Church in Vermont, the initiative is funded by the Melbourne Anglican Foundation.
Rev. Grace Wang, who leads the 'Truth and Grace Congregation' in Hammersmith, emphasised the importance of creating a safe space for vulnerable youth to build relationships and share their lives. Initially, the young people were withdrawn and hesitant to make eye contact. However, they began to open up and engage as they found a sense of belonging in the programme.
Ping Luo, working one-on-one with young people, noticed that they struggled to make new friends at school and felt isolated. The Safe Space initiative enabled them to connect with their peers, fostering a supportive community. The programme received funding for food and mentoring, making it free for young people to participate.
Safe Space, started by Rev. Grace Wang and Ping Luo, has created a haven for Chinese youth in Melbourne. By providing a safe environment, the initiative helps young people build relationships, share their lives, and find support. The programme's success is evident in the young people's growing engagement and the positive impact it has on their lives.
