Scholar Machiel Kiel's Legacy Preserves Ottoman Architecture in the Balkans

Machiel Kiel, a distinguished scholar, dedicated over five decades of his life to the study and preservation of Ottoman architecture and social-economic history in the Balkans. His meticulous field research, exceptional scholarship, and creation of a unique photographic archive have ensured that the Ottoman architectural heritage of the region remains accessible for future generations.

Kiel's work, which includes the landmark publication "Studies on the Ottoman Architecture of the Balkans," brought together decades of field research and archival analysis. This book offers a counter-narrative to nationalist histories that had long ignored or downplayed the Ottoman past.

The archive, preserved at the Netherlands Institute in Türkiye, contains thousands of images of buildings scattered throughout the Balkans, many of which no longer exist. Kiel's language skills allowed him to build long-lasting relationships with local historians, imams, archivists, and villagers. He was fluent in Dutch, German, English, and French, but his mastery of Turkish, Serbian, and Bulgarian distinguished his work in Ottoman studies.

Kiel collected oral histories, clarified local architectural knowledge, and retrieved invaluable anecdotal evidence. His fluency enabled him to decipher handwritten Ottoman script as well as modern documents. This wealth of information supports restoration projects and scholarly research worldwide, making the archive a visual time capsule of the region's history.

Among his most influential works, "Studies on the Ottoman Architecture of the Balkans" serves as a testament to Kiel's dedication to preserving the Ottoman heritage. The book emphasizes the intertwining of peoples, cultures, and histories represented in Ottoman Balkan architecture, helping to contextualize this heritage within the broader tapestry of Byzantine, Slavic, and Western influences in the region.

Professor Machiel Kiel passed away on July 29, 2025, but his legacy continues to inspire those committed to the preservation of cultural heritage. His life work significantly advanced the understanding and conservation of Ottoman architectural heritage in the Balkans, ensuring this important cultural history remains accessible for future generations.
