UK SMEs Embrace Environmental Initiatives and Support Employee Wellbeing

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK are taking significant strides to reduce their carbon footprint and support employee wellbeing. According to a survey by Purbeck Insurance Services, almost two-thirds of UK SMEs are introducing initiatives to decrease their carbon emissions [1].

One of the key areas of focus for SMEs is transitioning to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. By capitalising on the UK's shifting energy landscape towards renewables, these businesses aim to reduce operational emissions and costs [1]. Additionally, SMEs are implementing energy efficiency measures and adopting carbon reduction plans aligned with the UK government's net zero target for 2050 [3][4].

Sustainable supply chains are another area of interest for UK SMEs. Many businesses are encouraging their suppliers to set science-based emissions targets, extending carbon reduction efforts across the value chain [2]. Innovation in sectors like construction, manufacturing, and technology is also helping to support renewable energy rollout, creating new business opportunities while reducing overall carbon output [1].

When it comes to employee wellbeing, SMEs are integrating environmental initiatives with wellbeing programs. For instance, businesses are promoting healthier workplaces through better indoor air quality and sustainable office environments supported by renewable energy [2]. Flexible working arrangements, such as remote work, are also being adopted to reduce commuting emissions and improve work-life balance [5].

Supporting green initiatives that foster employee engagement and pride in contributing to climate goals can enhance morale and mental health [2]. In fact, a significant proportion of SMEs committed to reducing their carbon footprint are run by people aged 25-34 [6].

During the ongoing cost of living crisis, 51% of UK SMEs have assisted their staff [7]. The most common actions SMEs are taking to reduce their carbon footprint include reducing waste and setting up recycling programs [8][9].

Interestingly, SMEs in the West Midlands are taking the most action on decarbonisation, while those in the North East are the least likely to introduce sustainability measures [10].

Purbeck Insurance Services, the only provider of personal guarantee insurance to small business owners in the UK, is hosting a free networking event for SME lenders on 4th June in O'Neill's, Broad Street, Birmingham [11].

The new survey from Purbeck Insurance Services reveals that close to a third (29%) of UK SMEs have carried on business as usual with no Government support during the pandemic [12].
