In the past, Germany's roadways were ruled by the Class 3 driver's license, a permit that allowed driving vehicles with a permissible total weight of up to 7.5 tonnes and towing trailers with a combined total weight of up to 12 tonnes. This license, which was the standard until 1999, covered medium trucks, delivery vehicles, and passenger vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes.

Before the 1999 license reform, the Class 3 license was the go-to for heavier vehicles, but it did not suffice for very heavy trucks or buses, which required a Class 2 or higher license. The European driving license classifications replaced and restructured the Class 3 category, with the equivalent now being category C1 for vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes.

The cost of obtaining a Class 3 driver's license in 1980 was around 2000 German Marks (DM), a figure that would translate to approximately 4,500 Euros in today's currency. Interestingly, the author's school friends managed to secure their licenses for 1200 DM, while the author himself spent an extra 800 DM due to a practical exam fail.

Despite the change in driver's license classes, Class 3 license holders, including the author, can still drive trucks up to 7.5 tonnes with a trailer up to 12 tonnes. The cost of obtaining a truck driver's license (C1 and E) today is around 4000 Euros. In contrast, the cost of a small motorcycle driver's license A1 ranges between 1000 and 3000 Euros, while a car driver's license (Class B) varies between 2100 and 4400 Euros, according to the ADAC.

The decrease in traffic fatalities since 1970, despite a strong increase in vehicles and kilometers traveled, can be attributed to changes in blood alcohol limits, smarter road designs, effective medical care, and built-in safety for car occupants. However, the stricter issuance of driver's licenses has not shown a particular effect in the accident statistics.

In summary, the Class 3 driver's license was a significant part of Germany's driving history, allowing its holders to drive a wide range of vehicles. Today, the equivalent licenses (B, A1, and C1 or C1E) continue to provide comprehensive permissions for drivers, contributing to the ongoing safety and efficiency of Germany's roads.
