Stunning Christian Frescoes Discovered in Turkish Baptism Cave
Archaeologists in Turkey have discovered stunning frescoes in a Christian cave, known as the Baptism Cave, in the ancient city of Syedra. The cave, part of the Heritage for the Future Project, is located in Antalya's Alanya district and dates back to between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.
The cave, situated east of Syedra's western gate, stretches around 10 meters deep, 5 meters wide, and up to 3 meters high, at an elevation of about 350 meters above sea level. Its interior is adorned with intricate frescoes depicting Christian symbols, religious writings, plant motifs, and figures related to its ritual use. The excavation team, working with permits from Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is currently studying the paintings to establish a more precise creation date.
One of the most striking features is a radiant cross with pearl motifs, flanked by garlands, on the outer surface of the baptismal niche. Inside, partially damaged figures are believed to represent the Virgin Mary. Another wall bears depictions of two figures, including Saint Paul holding a book inscribed with a verse from the Psalms, and a figure thought to represent Jesus seated on a throne. Syedra's Ministry of Culture and Tourism considers the Baptism Cave one of the city's most important monuments reflecting its Christian heritage.
The Baptism Cave in Syedra offers valuable insights into the Christian heritage of the region during the Byzantine period. The discovery of these frescoes not only enriches our understanding of the past but also highlights the importance of preservation efforts like the Heritage for the Future Project.
