In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Tierpark Hellabrunn in Munich is grappling with the loss of their young bull elephant, Otto, who passed away on June 16, 2025, due to a herpes virus infection known as EEHV 1. The four-and-a-half-year-old elephant was a popular figure at the zoo, known for his charismatic personality and influential role within the herd.
Otto's illness led to the temporary closure of the Elephant House for treatment and safety measures. However, following his tragic demise, the zoo is scheduled to reopen to visitors shortly. The remaining herd is currently under the care and supervision of dedicated keepers and veterinarians, though specific details about changes in the herd dynamics or introductions of new elephants have not been disclosed in the latest updates.
Rasem Baban, the director and zoo director of Tierpark Hellabrunn, expressed the deep sadness felt by both the animal keeper team and the entire staff. He explained that despite the intense efforts of veterinarians, animal keepers, and cooperating laboratories, they were unable to save Otto.
Otto's passing has left a profound impact not only on the staff but also on the other elephants in the herd, including Rani and Savani who were previously part of the elephant group at Leipzig Zoo. As is usual with elephants, Rani and Savani said their goodbyes to Otto.
Meanwhile, the Leipzig Zoo continues to hope for elephant offspring with their matriarch caring for Savani and another young elephant in the herd.
The loss of Otto underscores the challenges of managing elephant health in captivity. The herpes infection, often fatal for young elephants, serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance required to maintain the health and well-being of these majestic creatures.
In honour of Otto, Tierpark Hellabrunn has highlighted his role as an ambassador for endangered Asian elephants, encouraging visitors to support conservation efforts and remember the charismatic young bull who touched the hearts of many.
The veterinarians and keepers at Tierpark Hellabrunn are now focusing on the well-being of the remaining elephants, including Rani and Savani, as they adapt to the loss of Otto. In an effort to raise awareness and support for endangered Asian elephants, Tierpark Hellabrunn has decided to remember Otto by promoting conservation initiatives and showcasing his influence as an ambassador for these majestic creatures within the home-and-garden and lifestyle realms.
