Lübeck Forest Guide Invites Residents to Explore City's Woodlands

A new forest guide, titled "Discover Lübeck's Forests!", has been developed by BUND Lübeck, inviting the population to explore 30 hiking tours through the Lübeck city forest. The second edition of the guide, which covers 139 pages, describes hiking routes in the city area, Lauenburg, East Holstein, a 54-kilometer long stage hike "Around Lübeck", and four cycling tours.

The guide, created by Ulrike Schröder and Reinhard Degener, has been made possible, in part, by the Lübeck Sparkassen Foundation. It contains extensive information about the development of the Lübeck forests and the internationally recognised forest management concept that BUND Lübeck has been practicing for three decades.

Hannes Napp, head of the city forest department, and Reinhard Degener from BUND presented the project on August 7, 2025. Napp highlighted that the forest concept applied in Lübeck becomes tangible through the guide, while Degener emphasised the importance of protecting the Lübeck forests through conscious experience.

The guide includes map excerpts and nature-related information about the Lübeck forests, with special marking signs added to make the routes easier to find. Information boards are being set up at the starting points of the tours.

Typically, a forest guide developed by a regional BUND group like BUND Lübeck would include educational content about local forest ecosystems, guidance for sustainable forest use and conservation practices, maps and suggested walking or cycling routes, information on the importance of forests for climate protection, biodiversity, and recreation, activities or programs for families, schools, and volunteers, and recommendations on how to observe and protect endangered species and natural habitats within the Lübeck region.

For precise details such as the scope of the Lübeck Forest Guide, its format (print, online, app), or specific features, it would be necessary to consult BUND Lübeck’s official publications or website directly. If you require assistance with locating these sources, feel free to ask.

In this context, the Lübeck Forest Guide, created by BUND Lübeck, not only offers hiking and cycling routes but also incorporates educational content on the local forest ecosystems, advocating for sustainable forest use and conservation practices. This guide, designed for residents, also emphasizes the importance of outdoor-living and home-and-garden, as it highlights the role of Lübeck forests in providing a healthy lifestyle and supporting biodiversity.
