Rainer Wenrich, an art and fashion expert from the Catholic University of Eichstätt, has been observing these changes. He notes a trend towards high-quality materials being used in dirndls, with clean processing, clear, precise cuts, and minimal decorative elements characterising the new style.
One of the most noticeable changes is the popularity of puff sleeves in the new dirndl trend. These voluminous sleeves are not just limited to blouses but are also appearing on dirndls themselves, adding a touch of elegance to the traditional outfit.
Another unexpected addition to the Oktoberfest fashion scene is the cowboy hat, which has become an "it-piece" this year, popular among both men and women.
Dirndls can extend up to the knee and above, with short mini dirndls becoming out of fashion. Knee-length or calf-length dirndls are now the preferred choice, reflecting a shift towards a more modest and sophisticated look.
Leather pants, both traditional and vegan, are also popular choices for Oktoberfest attire. Fashion expert Rainer Wenrich encourages individuality in clothing choices, advocating against a folk fashion dictatorship.
In the realm of footwear, sneakers, especially white ones, are a fashionable alternative to Haferlschuhe this year, serving as a statement of style. Mary Janes, or ballerina-like shoes with straps over the foot, are sometimes worn with the new dirndl style.
High-quality jewelry is sometimes seen as a decorative element in the new dirndl trend, adding a touch of glamour to the traditional outfit. However, incoherent accessories, such as head and neck jewelry or shoes that don't match in colour, are considered unfashionable.
There is a shift towards high-quality and durable clothing at Oktoberfest, moving away from fast fashion trends of recent years. Natural materials, velvet, and corduroy are also used in the new dirndl trend, contributing to its timeless appeal.
An interesting development in the dirndl trend is the fusion of Bavarian design with traditional African fabrics. Annette Weidner, the founder of the label "Isarhippie", has brought handmade dirndls from Uganda to Germany, combining the two cultures in a unique and beautiful way.
However, it's important to remember that marijuana is still prohibited at Oktoberfest. So, while you're enjoying the fashionable new trends, make sure to abide by the rules and have a safe and enjoyable time at Munich's celebrated beer festival.
