Lafayette, California - Ever opened a pizza box to find something different? Instead of the typical round pizza, you've got a square delight! Enter Square Pie Guys, the local hero tossing square pizzas around the Bay Area.
Now, you might be thinking, "Another pizza joint?" But this one's different. They make square pizzas, as the name suggests. Their creation might seem unusual, but it's won over many a pizza lover among us.
Square Pie Guys doesn't bring you your typical deep-dish Chicago-style pizza. Don't get me wrong; I'm a die-hard Zachary's fan (their classic deep-dish is a treat), but when it comes to Square Pie Guys, they offer something new, something fresh. Their pizzas may be thick, but they're far from dense - more like fluffy clouds of pizza heaven.
Recently, I got a taste of Square Pie Guys through Local Kitchens in Lafayette, California. I was there to check out Koi Palace, a legendary dim sum spot doing a pop-up, and the restaurant was kind enough to send a pizza for the kids, who aren't big on traditional dim sum.
But oh boy, that pizza was a show-stealer. The kids chowed down on a good chunk and left me with one delicious slice. I was skeptical about square pizza at first - too much crust, perhaps? But Square Pie Guys breathing new life into the crust game. It's thicker but lighter than traditional pizzas - almost like biting into a slice of focaccia bread, minus the soggy holes.
Now, let's talk about those toppings! I ordered a simple cheese pizza, but the mozzarella slices on top made it sing. From the earthy tang of the dough to the tender cheese core and the deliciously crispy crust, Square Pie Guys nailed it.
I won't abandon Zachary's just yet, but Square Pie Guys offers a value add. They've crafted something fresh in the deep-dish world that I hadn't tried before. I wasn't expecting much, given it was for the kids, but little did I know, I'd find a new pizza love!
