Unveiled gastronomic secret: savoring coffee and the right meal around the Little Alster

The Rathauspassage, a social project and cultural passage situated directly in front of the town hall at the Jungfernstieg S-Bahn station (Rathausmarkt 3), has been a vibrant part of Hamburg's cityscape since 1998. Known as "Hamburg's social harbour," it combines café, bistro, bookstore, and cultural events in one place.

One of the most popular spots within the Rathauspassage is the Cafédrale, the culinary heart of the passage. Situated right at the city hall square (Rathausmarkt), the Cafédrale offers cozy indoor seating as well as outdoor seating by the Kleine Alster, providing a pleasant riverside atmosphere.

The outdoor seating allows guests to enjoy traditional Hamburg dishes and drinks while taking in the view of the water and the Alsterarkaden. The Cafédrale serves regional specialties like Norddeutsche Rohrkartoffeln, Labskaus, and Matjesbrötchen, along with daily changing lunch menus.

The Rathauspassage, which underwent a complete renovation and expansion, now features large windows facing the Alster, providing ample natural light. The idea for the Rathauspassage was conceived during a visit by Prince Charles to Hamburg.

The Rathauspassage was created to address criticisms of "luxury above, poverty below" in the area under the town hall square. Today, it employs approximately 50 long-term unemployed individuals and provides training for those preparing for their return to the job market. Ten volunteers and ten specialists work at the Rathauspassage.

Guests can now enjoy coffee, cake, or lunch outdoors directly on the Kleine Alster with a view of the water and the Alsterarkaden. The Rathauspassage has obtained a permit for outdoor dining.

The Cafédrale is open Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 9:30 AM to 6 PM. For inquiries, please contact 040 60002000. To find the Cafédrale in Rathauspassage, Hamburg, with outdoor seating by the Kleine Alster, head to the Rathauspassage at Rathausmarkt 3, 20095 Hamburg.
