Unveiling of "Reißzwecke" Attached to Panel A in Halle-Neustadt
In the heart of Halle-Neustadt, a new art installation named "500:1:1:500" is taking shape, adding a fresh and intriguing element to the district's public space. This project, part of the City of Halle (Saale)'s Guidelines for Art in Architecture, is set to be a significant contributor to the citizens' identification with their district.
The installation, created by artists Michael Krenz and Martin Schwand, was selected by a jury in 2023 for a public art competition focused on the Neustadt district. The artists' vision is to symbolise the variability and challenges of urban planning through large pushpin sculptures made from galvanized steel, wood, and concrete.
The installation, located in the large square in Neustadt between Neustadt-Centrum and the city administration building "Scheibe A", consists of seven large and three smaller thumbtacks, intended as shade providers and seating elements. Concrete planning for the installation can only begin after the completion of the first thumbtack, expected in the coming weeks.
The majority of the public art in Halle-Neustadt dates back to before 1989, playing a significant role in the district's identity. Approximately 100 works of art in Halle-Neustadt's public space, dating before 1989, significantly contribute to the citizens' identification with their district. The thumbtacks, made of fire-zinc-coated steel, wood, and concrete, symbolize the planned city of Neustadt.
The project has a budget of 180,000 euros, with 150,000 euros coming from funding for the surroundings of the high-rise "Scheibe A". However, the significant increase in construction prices since the competition and the city council's resolution has yet to determine how many more sculptures can be realized.
The City of Halle (Saale) actively promotes and presents contemporary art in the public space, and this new installation is a testament to their commitment. The public art in Halle-Neustadt significantly contributes to the citizens' identification with their district, making it an integral part of the city's identity.
