Unveiling the Intimate: Windsor Smith's Private World

In the latest issue of Rue magazine, designer Windsor Smith highlights several contemporary interior design trends for 2025. The common thread in these trends is a focus on texture, bold prints, voluminous drapes, contrast, and intricate detailing.

  1. Texture: Designers are layering various materials to create inviting and cozy interiors. The layered textures consist of bouclé, nubby rugs, faux fur, and textured wall coverings. Additionally, terrazzo for flooring and backsplashes, bamboo, and recycled glass for accents contribute to visual and tactile interest while supporting sustainability trends.
  2. Mottled and Patterned Prints: Terrazzo with speckled, mottled patterns and other bold and surreal prints are making a mark. Expect to see surreal stripes, subtle textured stripes, polka dots, moiré effects, gingham, and animal prints like Dedar’s Tiger Mountain print. Pattern play, particularly maximalist patterns that mix florals, foliage, and animal motifs, is also a strong comeback.
  3. Volume and Drape: Luxurious drapery adding softness and grandeur to interior spaces is another key trend. This is seen in the form of voluminous curtains, textured throws, and oversized pillows. These elements help frame windows and contribute to a feeling of opulence and warmth.
  4. Contrast: Designers are combining deep, moody colors with lighter, earthy tones for a dramatic backdrop. Mixed metals like brass and nickel, as well as the contrast between large scale and small scale patterns, are popular for creating visual intrigue.
  5. Detailed Prints: Intricate embroidery and wallpapers inspired by antique tapestries and Indienne prints are trending. These detailed patterns bring a sense of history and craftsmanship to modern spaces, and statement wallpapers with foliage, birds, and intertwining flowers are being used to create focal points within a room.

These trends suggest a shift towards spaces that are curated yet cozy, maximalist without being overwhelming, and grounded in both sustainability and luxury.

Incorporating home-and-garden elements, designers are opting for terrazzo with speckled, mottled patterns for flooring and backsplashes (patterned prints). Following the focus on texture, they are also emphasizing voluminous drapes, textured throws, and oversized pillows for adding softness and grandeur to living spaces (volume and drape).
