WGT's impending competition is on the horizon
The city of Leipzig is set to host a groundbreaking new festival, the **NEXUS - Nerd Rock Festival**. This unique event, scheduled to take place from July 11 to 13, 2025, at the agra Exhibition Grounds, seamlessly combines gaming, rock & metal music, and a medieval market, making it a one-of-a-kind cultural experience[1].
At the heart of NEXUS lies a multidisciplinary mix, setting it apart from traditional festivals that focus primarily on music or gaming alone. Attendees can indulge in video gaming, then dive into mosh pits at rock or metal concerts, and even participate in medieval market activities such as archery[1]. This multi-genre and multi-activity concept is unprecedented worldwide.
The festival taps into the natural overlaps between gaming, rock/metal, anime, and medieval enthusiast communities. For instance, many fans attending major rock festivals or gaming conventions often sport related tattoos or band shirts, and all these groups also tend to gather at medieval fairs. NEXUS unites these intersecting interests in one event[1].
The idea for NEXUS was born during the Corona pandemic, when many events were cancelled. Over three years, Festival Director Rick Wölbling and a volunteer team developed this unique concept, focusing on community and shared culture rather than just entertainment[1].
The festival's line-up boasts a diverse array of rock, metal, and alternative bands, including genres like symphonic metal, post-hardcore, metalcore, pop-punk, and nerd/anime rock. It also hosts gaming conventions and niche concert styles appealing to the "nerd" subculture, such as anime trap metal and fantasy-themed performances[4].
Notable bands such as Beyond The Black and LaFee, who is making her Leipzig comeback after 15 years, are scheduled to perform. In addition, there will be 25 bands performing and 32 panel discussions during the event[2].
Approximately 160 exhibitors from the cosplay and gaming areas will be present. The festival director noted that there are overlapping points between the various scenes (gaming, rock music, and medieval markets) in other events[1].
