Winter Bush Nourishment: Preparing Shrubs for Cold Weather
In the heart of autumn, it's time to nurture our beloved hydrangea bushes to prepare them for the winter season. Grit Richter, the gardening expert behind "The Little Garden at the Edge of the Universe," shares valuable tips on autumn care for large-flowered and panicled hydrangeas.
One crucial step in this process is phosphorus-potassium fertilization. Potassium monophosphate, with a dose of one tablespoon per 10 litres of water, is an option for this purpose. While it may be on the pricier side, its effectiveness in ensuring the health and resilience of hydrangeas makes it a worthy investment.
For those who prefer a dry application method, combining 1 tablespoon of potassium sulfate and 1 tablespoon of superphosphate, then sprinkling them around the hydrangea bush, is another viable choice. Afterward, simply incorporate the fertilizer into the soil and replace the mulch. This method is particularly convenient for those who prefer not to carry buckets.
It's essential to apply these fertilizers after rain when the soil is wet for optimal effect. If superphosphate granules haven't dissolved, they should be buried in the soil—they will slowly nourish the plant over time.
Following the phosphorus-potassium fertilization, magnesium glycinate is applied to prevent leaf yellowing and slow growth. The recommended amount of magnesium sulfate is 1 tablespoon per bush, either sprinkled around the plant or dissolved in 10 litres of water. For those seeking an alternative, potassium-magnesium can be used in the same way.
Magnesium is particularly important for hydrangeas that bloom in June, like 'Merveille de France,' or those that set buds late, like 'Polar Bear.'
For beginners, a ready-made fall fertilizer with clear dosing is a practical alternative. The solution is poured around the hydrangea bush, about 20-30cm from the center.
Remember, when it comes to fertilizers, concentrated solutions should be avoided to prevent burning the roots. Always follow the instructions carefully, and enjoy the vibrant blooms your hydrangeas will bring next season!
