Workset for Resurfacing on Prominent Conwy Section of NCN 5 Ahead

In the picturesque town of Deganwy, Conwy, the National Cycle Network Route 5 (NCN 5) is set to undergo a significant transformation. Known for its role in promoting health, accessibility, and social inclusion, as well as boosting local tourism and economic activity, the route's resurfacing works are a priority for sustaining these benefits.

The NCN 5, which forms part of the Wales Coastal Path, spanning 367 miles from Reading to Holyhead, is particularly popular in Deganwy, with an estimated annual usage of over 429,000 walking and cycling trips. This section of the route, bordering Afon Conwy, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), making its maintenance a delicate operation.

Anthony Jones, Network Development Manager at the project's website, emphasized the importance of the route to the local community and tourism in North Wales. The deterioration of the current surface of this section of Route 5, as well as its impact on usage, is a concern that the project aims to address.

The resurfacing works will take place in two stages, with the first being a site clearance toward the end of the summer. Tailored risk assessment & method statements have been developed, and an on-site ecologist will conduct pre-nesting survey checks to ensure minimal disruption to the SSSI.

The project team is committed to maintaining the route's popularity and ensuring its benefits for nearby communities, including social, health, and tourism benefits. Led walks and rides are planned for the following spring to celebrate the resurfaced route.

The project is a partnership with Conwy County Borough Council and is funded by the Welsh Government. Natural Resources Wales has been liaising with the project team to ensure all precautions are taken to avoid damage to the SSSI.

The resurfacing works are expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The project's website provides information on discovering local National Cycle Network routes and learning about the benefits they offer. The team encourages everyone, including those with disabilities, pregnancies, or maternity, to enjoy the improved route once completed.

The NCN 5, which lies within the landscape of Deganwy, serves not only as an integral part of the Wales Coastal Path but also catalyzes outdoor-living and home-and-garden activities for the community. This transformation in the route's surface ensures the continuous promotion of lifestyle improvements, fostering health, social inclusion, and boosting tourism within the region.
