Zoo Leipzig: Shock for animal keeper - "First sighting in eleven years"

An exquisite moment at Leipzig Zoo

Discoveries that leave animal keepers with hearts pounding wouldn't be uncommon at Leipzig Zoo, and Lasse Nieberding, an animal keeper, recently experienced one such thrill. The scene of delight unfolded in the Eurasian eagle owl's enclosure, provoking joy throughout the whole team.

Eleven years had passed since the Eurasian eagle owls took up residence in Leipzig Zoo, and these nocturnal entities continued to coexist harmoniously in their aviary. The. offspring had been an elusive sight, despite the keepers' hopes, as nature often dictates its own course. But finally, as fate would have it, the awaited moment had arrived.

Leipzig Zoo: A tale of hope and new beginnings

An routine observation by Lasse Nieberding led to a revelation in the Eurasian eagle owls' enclosure. A remarkable change in the male owl's behavior caught his eye, as he seemed distinctly preoccupied with the female residing in a cave. "His behavior was notably different," Lasse explains to the camera team from MDR documentary "Elephant, Tiger & Co.". "He kept staring," he adds, emphasizing the female's location.

Uncharted waters: The miracle of new life

The clue was subtle but sinister. Eggs. "We figured there might be some," confesses Lasse Nieberding, with the team having a rough idea of the hatching timeline. And in due course, two small, lively chicks made their entrance into the world, unfaltering proof of new life. "We took a quick peek to ensure she wasn't sitting on cracked eggs. You never know," Lasse elaborates further.

A video capturing the duo's first moments outside the shell has surfaced, showcasing two tiny, wobbly chicks, huddled together in the box. The excitement at Leipzig Zoo is evocative of joy unbridled, as Lasse proclaims, "It's the first time in eleven years, we're all over the moon about it!"

You can catch episode 1128 of "Elephant, Tiger & Co." in the ARD media library.

Though there are no official reports or video links available in current sources, be sure to keep an eye on Leipzig Zoo’s official website or social media channels for updates on these adorable additions or consult reputable wildlife and zoo news sources.

In the heartwarming moments at Leipzig Zoo, a new chapter unfolded as the arrival of two Eurasian eagle owls' chicks was confirmed, bringing a sense of hope and excitement to the home-and-garden of the majestic birds.
